The JH2 one tree home Story

Nicaragua Forest Aerial Photograph

For the last 10 years, JOHNHOUSHMAND has handcrafted the basic elements of wood, glass and steel to combine art and function in limited edition and custom made urban organic furniture.  Houshmand’s work has won numerous design awards and been featured in newspapers and magazines worldwide, including House Beautiful, Dwell, New York magazine, Interior Design, Elle Décor and W Magazine.  Houshmand has worked with high end residential clients internationally, as well as with commercial clients, including Nobu 57 restaurant and Barney’s in New York, the Little Nell Hotel in Aspen and Four Seasons and W Hotels.

Now, to make John Houshmand’s design aesthetic more widely available, he has created the JH2 OneTreeHome collection, teaming up with Jack Donenfeld, a partner in Simplemente Madera Group®, a Nicaraguan timber company and furniture maker.  Donenfeld and Simplemente Madera share Houshmand’s commitment to reducing environmental impacts and taking good care of the people involved in making wood products.

Several years ago, John Houshmand was invited to Nicaragua to see first-hand the devastation wrought by Hurricane Felix, a disaster that affected over 3 million acres of rainforest and unsettled the lives of the people living there. Deeply moved, John Houshmand banded together with Jack Donenfeld, a partner in Simplemente Madera Group®, to improve conditions in the area by productively utilizing the trees felled by the hurricane in a way that maintains the integrity of the local ecosystem.  JH2 OneTreeHome is the culmination of this effort.

The JH2 OneTreeHome furniture collection includes beds, benches, coffee tables and side tables, consoles, dining tables and desks, all crafted from beautiful, sustainably-sourced Nicaraguan tropical hardwoods.  Challenging the division between fine and functional arts, our designs engage the basic elements of wood, glass and specialty metals in a way that heightens and reveals their underlying splendors.  Our designs celebrate nature without compromising practicality.

Our mission is both to offer unique designs and to ensure that our products and their manufacturing conform to the highest and best standards of social and environmental responsibility.  We named our company after Simplemente Madera’s One Tree Project, where a single tree was used to teach a Nicaraguan community how to become economically self-sufficient through sustainable woodworking practices, showcasing how global deforestation can be addressed one tree at a time.

JH2 OneTreeHome carries on the vision of the One Tree Project, making sustainability a priority in all phases of the furniture making process.  All of our furniture is made from wood that is certified for sustainability by the Forest Stewardship Council®, the “gold standard” of international sustainability certifications, guaranteeing that the wood used in our furniture originates from socially and environmentally responsible forest operations.
