John Houshmand Since 2000, John Houshmand has been involved in custom interior design solutions and, through JOHNHOUSHMAND, has worked as a fabricator and retailer of limited edition and custom-made urban organic furniture. His discerning clientele has included the Four Seasons Hotels, W Hotels, Barney’s New York, Robert DeNiro, Michael Smith for The White House, and Nobu Restaurant in New York. His “functional art” has been featured in magazines worldwide, including House Beautiful, Dwell, New York magazine, Interior Design, Elle Décor and W Magazine, to name just a few.
Raised by a Dutch-American mother and an Iranian father, John has always danced between Eastern philosophy and Western principles and spent his youth abroad in the Philippines, Great Britain, Iran, and Israel.
John received his undergraduate degree in Art History in 1978 at Yale University. In the midst, he explored the worlds of professional photography and ceramic arts, and his work has been featured in gallery exhibits and major publications. Because working with his hands proved a natural extension of his inner vision, John immersed himself in an assortment of artistic realms.
John spent 24 years as one of two principals at a renowned construction firm in Manhattan, building close to a half billion dollars of the highest-end architected projects in the city. The firm was award winning, and highly published, building homes and townhouses for Robert Redford, Calvin Klein, Ian Schrager, Harrison Ford, Sara Jessica Parker, Edgar Bronfman, Mary Boone, and others. He was involved in renovating the Paramount Hotel – Times Square and the Mercer Hotel, along with a host of other museum, corporate and hospitality projects.
John's inventive essence and exceptional life experiences have harmonized to produce furniture that embodies the simplicity of Eastern aesthetics, a vibrant celebration of nature, and a deep reverence for all things esoteric.
